Kobuk River Canoeing

The iridescent arctic grayling, delicious arctic char, voracious northern pike and the world famous Kobuk River sheefish provides sporting variety for fishing enthusiasts on this canoe trip in the western comer of the Brooks Range. Our 60 mile river trip begins at a beautiful lake surrounded by the mountains of the Brooks Range. From here we will paddle down a small tributary of the Kobuk River. The Kobuk's beautiful clear flowing waters flow westward through the arctic boreal forest. As we float through this beautiful counrty, we keep sharp eyes open and cameras ready for the moose, wolves, beaver, caribou, bear, and lynx who leave their tracks along the gravel bars and shoreline.

Sheefish along the Kobuk RiverThe Kobuk River drainage is one of the most productive freshwater fisheries in the Arctic. The clearwater Kobuk and its tributaries are best known for the famous sheefish, often called the Eskimo Tarpon, a fish that matures up to 60 pounds. This river system also offers excellent arctic grayling fishing in the gravel riffles and northern pike fishing in its deep water sloughs.

This productive fishery attracts peregrine falcons, eagles, ospreys and bears, both black and grizzly. The Kobuk Valley is one of the few areas of the Brooks Range where osprey nests are commonly seen. Although We are still likely to see these large birds gliding into their tree-top nests with fish clutched in their talons for their youngsters.
