Gates of the Arctic
National Park

Gates of the Arctic National Park spans approximately 200 miles across the mountain wilderness of the central Brooks Range, from the Noatak Biosphere Reserve on its western boundary to Bob Marshall's craggy peaks "the Gates of the Arctic" in the east. Gates of the Arctic National Park offers no roads, trails, buildings, nor park service infrastructure of any kind within the boundaries of this pristine mountain wilderness. It is a sterling example of a true wilderness park.

Alinement Creek Gates of the ArcticWithin the Gates of the Arctic National Park lie six National Wild Rivers, the Noatak, Alatna, North Fork of the Koyukuk, Kobuk, John and the Tinayguk. In the remote northern part of the park the Killik and Nigu Rivers also offer the river traveler excellent opportunities to hike and enjoy many wildlife sightings. Backpacking routes through the passes that connect the headwaters of these major drainage basins are nearly unlimited.

This vast northern landscape is part of an intact mountain ecosystem where the habitat of caribou, bears, sheep, wolves and other wildlife is preserved for generations to come. With the combined park units of Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve and the adjoining parklands of the Noatak National Preserve, the Kobuk Valley National Park and the Cape Krusenstern National Monument, nearly 35 million acres and a 700 mile span of the Brooks Range remains protected. In a time when wildlife populations exist in ever-shrinking and isolated pockets of habitat, these adjoining parklands help to preserve healthy populations of arctic wildlife by protecting their migration corridors and maintaining territories large enough for genetic diversity.

ABEC Alaska has been guiding trips through this vast wilderness for over 20 years. On our Arctic adventures we follow rivers from their sources high in the Brooks Range, and the footsteps of countless generations of caribou. Our schedule includes river journeys with day hikes, backpacking trips through remote wilderness, and a combination of backpack and river trips, allowing us to increase the length of our stay in this arctic wilderness for two to three weeks expeditions.
