Gates of the Arctic

Gates of the Arctic National Park spans approximately 200 miles across the mountain wilderness of the central Brooks Range, from the Noatak Biosphere Reserve on its western boundary to Bob Marshall's craggy peaks "the Gates of the Arctic" in the east. Gates of the Arctic National Park offers no roads, trails, buildings, nor park service infrastructure of any kind within the boundaries of this pristine mountain wilderness. It is a sterling example of a true wilderness park.
This vast northern landscape is part of an intact mountain ecosystem where the habitat of caribou, bears, sheep, wolves and other wildlife is preserved for generations to come. With the combined park units of Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve and the adjoining parklands of the Noatak National Preserve, the Kobuk Valley National Park and the Cape Krusenstern National Monument, nearly 35 million acres and a 700 mile span of the Brooks Range remains protected. In a time when wildlife populations exist in ever-shrinking and isolated pockets of habitat, these adjoining parklands help to preserve healthy populations of arctic wildlife by protecting their migration corridors and maintaining territories large enough for genetic diversity.
