Arrigetch Peaks Backpack

Arrigetch Peaks lie within the Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska's Brooks Range. ABEC's backpack trip into the heart of Arrigetch Peaks allows you ample time to explore and photograph these lofty rock precipices. Arrigetch is an Eskimo word meaning "fingers of a hand outstretched". From the nearby Alatna River, these granitic spires do indeed resemble fingers reaching for the sky.

Arrigetch Peaks in Gates of the ArcticOur backpacking route ascends from the forested Alatna River valley along Arrigetch Creek to the alpine meadows beneath the peaks. Near the foot of these rugged rock faces we drop our backpacks and base camp for a few days, allowing us the time and freedom to explore the cirques beneath sheer granite walls with lighter daypacks. A new valley beckons every day, each one different from the others. In the narrow "Valley of Aquarius" the peaks are reflected in a series of aquamarine-colored lakes. Another day we hike through meadows of Alaska cotton grass while overhead white patches of permanent snowfields cling to the slopes of Melting Tower and Zanadu. We explore them all in this fantasyland of vertical rock, snow, lakes and alpine meadows.

ABEC's backpack trip into Arrigetch Peaks is designed for intermediate backpackers and is not a climbing trip. For over 50 years, however, these unusual granitic faces have attracted climbing expeditions. For more information on the climbing history of Arrigetch Peaks, see Arrigetch Rock Climbs.

Moose, wolves, and bear (black bears and grizzlies) inhabit this area. We may be lucky to see these and other animals of the arctic, especially caribou. We utilize game trails for much of the way as we backpack into Arrigetch Peaks, but the hiking conditions can be difficult at times with stretches of tussocks, slippery lichen-covered boulders and patches of thick brush. Reindeer lichen cushions your footsteps and blueberries provide a special treat along the trail. As we hike higher and reach the alpine, we leave the brush behind and hiking conditions improve.
